Last summer, I was sitting on a patio drinking Aperol spritzes (insert wistful sigh) with a lovably blunt friend who told me, “You dress like a wedding guest.” It was quite possibly the most insightful thing anyone has ever said about me or my personal style. Yes, I’m an enthusiastic over-dresser, but at least I’m prepared should I get invited to someone’s tasteful marriage ceremony with 20 minutes’ notice. Still, the pandemic (and winter) has weakened my resolve and shaken my commitment to dresses.

Enter the sweater dress. Casual, yet polished, a knit midi is just the thing to break me out of the sweatpant doldrums and make me feel just a little bit more like myself. Here, eight options to wear with tights and boots now, and, someday, maybe even a wedding.

Cashmere is a game-changer, and this 100 per cent cashmere sweater dress (which I have in black) saves me on those “nothing to wear” days. This dress, some tights and boots and you’ve got yourself an outfit, and a killer one at that.

Twik dress, $30, simons.ca

It’s not cashmere, but this extremely affordable turtleneck sweater dress offers a similar blank canvas for great outfits. Throw absolutely anything over it (a sweater vest, a cardigan, even a white button-down?) to take it from basic to something more special.
